A new bug has appeared in the wild! Devices including iPhones, iPads, Apple Watches and Macs, are crashing when they receive a message containing a unique combination of symbols and characters known as the “Effective Power Bug”. While no one is spreading this message on a wide-scale, you may receive it as a “prank” from a friend or colleague. This message can be sent via apps like Messages, Twitter, and SnapChat, rendering these services unusable.
Apple has acknowledged the existence of this bug and is working on a fix. In the meantime, should you fall victim to this message, follow these steps to reclaim your apps:
- Activate Siri and ask it to “read unread messages”.
- Then, use Siri to reply to the message. Any response will do.
- After you reply, you’ll be able to open the Messages app again. Swipe left on the conversation containing the text, tap “More”, and delete the message from the thread.
